Sixteen92 Winter Collection Review

**Disclaimer that I get these at a discount because I am a part of The Circle subscription and that perfume is deeply personal and vary from nose to nose and skin to skin**

This season's collection is inspired by 20th century poetry, each perfume is going to be linked to its corresponding poem, in case you're interested in reading them. I found that my interpretation of the scent and its relationship to its name changed when I went and read the poem where the name came from.

I am always unexpectedly surprised by Sixteen92's ability to wow me with the perfumes that I would never imagine liking. However, their perfumes that incorporate a lot of sweet notes without being a true gourmand never smell very good to me.

Candy Cane Mocha ★★
This is technically from their holiday sample set, but it made a guest appearance in the box, and is therefore getting reviewed for you. The scent is amazing, but the quality of the perfume itself is a little disappointing. Good news though, I think it will make great bath and body products.

In the Bottle: Peppermint hot cocoa

On the skin: It really does smell like a peppermint mocha, but then it fades to only being candy cane, and then it fades off into a sort of marshmallow scent.

Sillage:

Lasting Time: 1 hour

This smells warm. I don't even know how to explain it. It is feminine leaning unisex and earthy and warm, this would be a four star perfume if I liked these sorts of scents more.

Company Description: sweet sandalwood, texas cedar heartwood, patchouli coeur, black vanilla, grey musk

In the Bottle: florals, and patchouli, and the warmth of liquor as is pours down your throat

On the skin: The florals become more distant, as does the patchouli. There is wood and sweetness, and mostly I get menthol and warmth. It fades into sweet wood and warmth.

Sillage:

Lasting Time: 3-4 hours

Domination of Black ★★

This is a unisex, masculine leaning sort of scent, I like it, but I don't think I personally want to smell like it. I think Domination of Black and And The Days Are Not Full Enough would be a great His and Hers perfume set, actually.

Company Description: orris root, soft suede, white santal, nutmeg, oakwood, lichen, chilled soil

In the Bottle: liquor and sandalwoody esque scent.

On the skin: alcohol, herby spices,  that same warmth as And The Days Are Not Full Enough, pine trees, its a warm earthy scent.

Sillage:

Lasting Time: 3-4 hours

Her Kind ★★
I can really see this scent being loved by a lot of people, it is well done despite seeming like an entirely different perfume in the bottle vs. on the skin. If you like fruity scents, I think this would be awesome in bath and body products, and if you like floral scents I would see if you can snatch up a sample to try this out for yourself.

Company Description: tart cherry, sweet almond, bergamot, sandalwood, ambrette, camellia blossom, tonka, sweet myrrh
In the Bottle: sweet almonds (not marzipan like usual, but actual sweet almonds), maraschino cherries, and a little bit of lemon?

On the skin: Mostly a floral, and vaguely sweet almond, but mostly a floral. Just a hint of spice once its dried down
Sillage:

Lasting Time: 3 hours

This is Just to Say
This is one of the only Sixteen92 perfumes that disappointed me almost completely in every way. It was artificial and abrasive and the notes didn't seem to belong together at all.

Company Description: cake flour, cocoa powder, osmanthus, plum and apricot jam, tonka bean, dried fruits, tangled vines.
In the Bottle: Dark fruity unisex scent. Thinking like plums and artificial "mixed berry" sort of scent.

On the skin: Cough syrup. Like, if I decided to mix cherry and grape cough syrup together this would be it.

Sillage:

Lasting Time: 3-4 hours

Waking In Winter ★★

Honestly, I was looking forward to this scent, and mostly ended up being disappointed.

Company Description: fir needle, hemlock, soft snow, pale woods, delicate mint, frost-blanketed leaves, cold metal, distant hearthsmoke

In the Bottle: Pine trees and mouth wash

On the skin: Sweet foresty mouth wash.

Sillage:

Lasting Time: 3 hours

Sixteen92 The Circle Review / Summer Collection Review

**Disclaimer that perfumes are incredibly personal and skin chemistry is a fickle mistress. Your personal perfume experience may differ from my own even with regards to lasting time.**

I gave in and purchased Sixteen92's the Circle subscription. For those of you who don't know, Sixteen92 has recently come out with a yearly subscription called The Circle. It is 85$ up front, registration opportunities open yearly. Shipments go out quarterly, and those registered get sent samples of all of the samples for that particular seasonal collection, and one other perfume sample. Registration for the year is closed, but this is still a review of the summer collection and the quality of sixteen92 packaging.

This is a super late review, but as the summer collection is out, I thought it was worth it all the same.

I got a packing slip (yay!), a bracelet extra, and a card explaining all the scents and giving me a unique code for 30% off anything from the summer collection.

The perfumes are wrapped in corrugated cardboard and sealed with a black rubber band. It is both cute, cost effective, and functional and I am very impressed.

Here is a shot of the back of the card and the baggie that was inside of the carboard. The perfumes sit inside very snugly so they don't break or move around and the label looks stamped, but it fully legible and doesn't smudge or anything, I like it.

Theda ★★

If you had the skin chemistry for this, I think this would be a great perfume.

Company Description: Tart sangria infused with ripe summer fruits (white peach, nectarine, berries, citrus), dark vanilla, wild vines, rose absolute
In the Bottle: Despite never having had sangria, it smells exactly as I expected. Wine and summer fruits.
On the skin: ...and it became smarties and axe. As it dries down it kind of just smells like moss
Sillage:
Lasting Time: 4 hours

Paper Moon ★★

Not my personal fragrance of choice, but I can see some people really liking this, especially if you enjoy the smell of moss.

Company Description: soft vanilla musk, benzoin, oakmoss, trailing ivy, peach blossom, tea rose
In the Bottle: a gentle peach scent, some light floral, and a faint wisp of moss.
On the skin: a touch of sweet fruitiness, but mostly just moss at first. As it dries down the peachy floral comes out more up close, but moss is still the first thing I note. To me it seems like a slightly feminine leaning unisex scent.
Sillage:
Lasting Time: 4 hours

The Beautiful & Damned ★★

Company Description: Sparkling pink grapefruit, strawberry, raspberry and currant with soft violet gardenia and Tahitian vanilla absolute.
In the Bottle: It smells like fruit. Not quite like fresh fruit, but really good fake fruit. However, it has a greenness to it that smells more natural and helps tone down the fruit scents just a little but not so much that fruit scent lovers would be disappointed.
On the skin: Patchouli and indistinct fruit.
Sillage: ✦ my mother could smell it all the way across the kitchen from me.
Lasting Time: 4 hours

Eternal Return ★★

Susannah is guest hosting this perfume review, because I am allergic to grass and thus cannot review this fragrance for you. She absolutely adores this fragrance, and we have a similar sense of smell, but different sense of taste.

Company Description: Peat moss and damp garden soil. Tomato leaf, beetroot, grass, lavender spikes, galbanum, sun-warmed oak bark.
In the Bottle: It smells exactly like a vegetable garden. A true unisex scent. I can actually smell the tomato leaf.
On the skin:
Sillage:
Lasting Time: 4 hours

Blood and Honey ★★

If you adore honey and honeysuckle and want to broadcast that to the world, you will love this perfume. I don't like my perfumes that strong, and I want them to be a little more nuanced.

Company Description: blood orange, wildflower honey (vegan), pale amber, honeysuckle
In the Bottle:  All honey suckle, maybe some amber deep within the vast abyss of honeysuckle
On the skin: Okay, the honey suckle settles a little on the skin, and some honey comes out. If I smell my wrist up close, there is the faintest wisp of blood orange.
Sillage:
Lasting Time: 4-5 hours

La Llorona ★★

La Llorona is the newest edition to the general catalog. For those who don't speak Spanish or don't know the history of the name, it translates to "the crying woman". It is an old Hispanic legend and if you are into that kind of thing like me you can read about it here

Company Description: Bulgarian and Egyptian rose absolute, pink and white pepper, pink grapefruit, wisteria, cashmere wood, pale amber
In the Bottle: Like citrus fruit and real silk
On the skin: Very similar when wet, a little more like citrus zest than citrus fruit. As it dries down I get more wood and roses but that fruit really keeps is nice and light for summer. By the end of the four hours the smell was still on my wrist, but it lost all its nuance and just smelled like smarties on crack.
Sillage:
Lasting Time: 4 hours

Final Thoughts

The summer collection wasn't really for me. It didn't help that I was allergic to one of the fragrances. The new general catalog scent was my favorite, and while I will wear it again, I don't see myself buying a full size. However, I am very much looking forward to the fall collections, as it seems Sixteen92 loves earthy and spicy scents which bodes well for the seasons of pumpkins, cinnamon, and peppermint yet to come.

From this collection it seems that Sixteen92 is a brand that blends their perfumes to smell good in the bottle, so its usually better if you have skin chemistry that doesn't change the perfume too much, unlike say Haus of Gloi where I hate 99% of their perfumes in the bottle and only like them after they settle into my skin.

These are well blended perfumes with high quality ingredients, they last an okay amount of time, and they largely smell like their description. I approve of this brand, and would generally recommend this collection to anyone who likes earthy scents.

Solstice Scents Review

I have heard raves upon raves upon raves about Solstice Scents on every indie forum ever, so I finally decided to pick up some samples, including the cult favorite: Blackburn's Parlor. I had very high expectations of this brand, and it is a good brand, but it doesn't quite live up to the hype the way I thought it would.

These are all well made super high quality perfumes (and beautiful packaging and customer service), but I was expecting some magical otherworldly experience. Instead, what I got was something ordinary in the best kind of way. I think everyone can find perfumes they love in this catalog even if every scent isn't its own Jan Van Eyck Arnolfini Wedding (zoom in on the mirror below the chandelier).

Shipping and Packaging

LIGHTNING FAST SHIPPING. My samples were shipped the next day, and in my hands three business days after ordering, the emails actually felt repetitive because everything happened so quickly. Also, I got an order confirmation (with my notes and what I ordered from the shop), a rewards points notification, an order processing confirmation, and a shipment notification.

Adorable and secure packaging. The stray wad of tissue paper was a little odd because it didn't actually have anything in it, but not anything to be upset about. I have never in my entire life been given so many extra pieces of (beautifully printed, aesthetically pleasing) papers before though.

The bottles are easy to open but don't leak, the labels are nice and handwritten (she even gives instructions not to touch them with oily hands, which I have already managed to do). This is some of the best shipping and packaging I have ever seen.

Price

$2.80 per sample, they come in sample packs of 5 or 10 and then they have themed collection sample sets. However, you get a free sample (of your choice) with every order so its more like $2.30-$2.50 per perfume sample.

Scent Reviews

Nightgown ★★

Company Description: Vanilla, White Chocolate, Tuberose and Tiare Flowers
In the Bottle: Fairly similar to how it is on the skin
On the skin: whiteboard marker, with some floral, and just a touch of sugar. For the people who want to huff Expo products without seeming like some sort of junkie.
Sillage:

Blueberry Muffin Batter ★★

My expectations of this were that it was going to smell like out-of-the-box blueberry muffin batter, so I thought I would mention this as it is an important bias.

Company Description: None given
In the Bottle: It smells like sweet bananas with some batter, but not what I had expected
On the skin: Good dehydrated blueberry, terrible batter, it is sweet but whole grainy like when my Home Economics teacher had us make bran muffins.
Sillage:

Can I make this one discontinued in exchange for Cocoa Mallow?

Cocoa Mallow ★★

Company Description: **also this is discontinued because apparently everything I love needs to be taken from me** Chocolate and Marshmallow
In the Bottle: When you open it up you are hit in the face with the smell of Swiss Miss Cocoa Mix, and then you start smelling the marshmallow once you adjust to the intense chocolate scent.
On the skin: I  think because of how strong this is in the bottle, it diffuses a bit better on the skin than other cocoa scents I have tried. It is exactly like if you put marshmallows in hot cocoa, and I think because of its sillage and lack of other notes that take away from this perfection, it surpasses my other chocolate perfume samples. Also, once it has dried down some, the marshmallow becomes stronger, not cloying, just more prominent.

Sillage:
Lasting Time: safely 6-7 hours but it can last all day if you aren't working out or anything like that.

Black Burn's Parlor ★★

Company Description: Vanilla Waffle Bowl, Vanilla & Chocolate Ice Creams, Banana, Caramel, Whipped Cream
In the Bottle: It smells like banana laffy taffy, I do enjoy banana laffy taffy, it is the only fake banana I like, but not so sure if I want to smell like it.
On the skin: The banana mellows out, and I get a bit of caramel and waffle cone (which do smell nice from the distance, they are the scent you get right at the edge of the perfume's sillage). I'm honestly not that into it though? It smells so good from a distance, and it isn't cloying at all, but one of my favorite things about perfume is being able to smell my wrist when I tuck my hair behind my ear or otherwise nervously play with my hair, and up close it is just the wrong combination of banana and caramel and waffle cone.

Sillage:
Lasting Time: 4-5 hours

Cardamom Rose Sugar ★★

Company Description: Brown Sugar, Cardamom, Moroccan & Bulgarian Rose Absolutes
In the Bottle: So in the bottle it has a very lemony tinge to it, very spicy with a background of sweet
On the skin: It is like my mother's french toast but with a spicy and lemon note in the background. I have yet to find the roses in this.
Edit: I know why it smells like my mother's french toast now. She always makes brown sugar syrup to go with it.
Sillage: ✧ this is a pretty strong fragrance, if you get fragrance headaches I can't recommend it.
Lasting Time: safely 7-8 hours, the scent is still there at that point, and usually lingers, but I don't think it has the same throw anymore (I say think because you eventually stop noticing any stimuli that you are constantly exposed to)

Pharaoh ★★

Company Description: Egyptian Musk, Honey & Frankincense Essential Oil.  SOFT MUSK
In the Bottle: Sharp, deep, some green to it.
On the skin: I'm wondering if this has a base of resin or amber to it because it has a very rich deep sharp smell to it, with just a hint of green. Petrified tree sap seems like it would match this description. I think I get a touch of floral and talc in the background (but this is a blind smell test so I could be terribly wrong).
Sillage: ✧ The strength of the scent is fine, but it is very present and distinct. It doesn't blend well into the background, people will get this scent in their nostrils and pause to wonder what it is.
Lasting Time: Safely 7-8 hours, this lasted me all day though. After twelve hours, it is still there faintly.

Deep Midnight Perfumes- Sherlock Holmes Sample Set

I thoroughly admit to being actually intrigued by only three of these scents, but they were given to me from my wishlist in a Valentine's Day Exchange and I nonetheless squeed like small child with candy when I saw these.

Shipping and Packaging

I can't tell you how they came packed or how the shipping was, but this product presentation is lovely. A midnight blue bag, a well designed and befitting business card, and nice labels with an interesting but easy to read font.

Though I do have to say that these bottles are impossible to open. They have these strange seal types things on them. My Blushie perfumes had a similar seal on them, but they were not so impossible to open. I have to use my silicone jar grips to pry the lids off, and even then it requires quite a bit of force.

Price

Full size perfumes are 17$
Most samples run 3$ a piece (they come in sets of 5, 10, and then in themed sample packs)

Scent Reviews

Professor M. ★★

Company Description: Follow the trail of rich leather, bay rum and pipe tobacco, with a sexy hint of Egyptian musk.
In the Bottle: No noticeable difference between my skin and the bottle.
On the Skin:  I recognize this smell but I can't tell you what it is, I get some tobacco and then this masculine leaning version of when sweet things dry. Like manly rotten fruit, in a way that is okay. Non-Blind commentary: Oh! I think that's rum, I'm thinking of how fruit smells when it is fermented.
Sillage:

221 B ★★

Company Description: oakmoss, tanned leather, hardy woods, crisp basil, amber, and lavender
In the Bottle: Tobacco and flowers, mostly tobacco (I think though what I may actually be smelling is woods and oak because this perfume does not list a tobacco note.)
On the Skin:  On the skin it very much mellows down and morphs into this super complex scent. There is a green aspect, a crisp aspect, the tobacco is always what I smell first but then it fades out and you can get the tanned leather and this elegant floral smell. It is very interesting.
Sillage:  At least on my skin the sillage is pathetic, that may be because my skin amps up the sweet in everything so the base notes aren't coming through, but it has a three inch throw.
Lasting Time:

A Study In Brown

Company Description: A scented story of aromatic copal, nutty tonka bean, oak wood smoke, and toasted sugar. Reminiscent of both far away travels and the comfort of enjoying a warm fire in your favorite library chair.
In the Bottle: A surprisingly nice mild smoke scent, a lot of spice, a little sweetness.
On the Skin:  It smells like a cigarette on me up close, from a distance though it is this very subtle waft of nose singing camping smell. It reminds me of being by the fire and eating some way over-spiced backpacking food while out on the trail.
Sillage:
Lasting Time: 4 hours

Save the Queen ★★

I am terrified of this supposed fresh grass note. I happen to be very allergic to grass and I am highly concerned that it will either give me a rash or bring back terrible memories.
Company Description: A veritable feast of three different and rich honeys (clover honey, basswood honey, raw honeycomb) tempered with dark tea, bergamot, and a faint note of fresh grass.
In the Bottle: FLOWERS with a rich sweetness in the background
On the Skin: During the dry down it briefly smelled like tons of honey, sickly sweet. Then it became a mixture of florals and honey sweetness, which I still found quite cloying.
Sillage:

No lasting time on this one because my wrist swelled up and itched and hurt. I may very well be insane, or I may actually be allergic to grass scented perfumes.

Miss Sherlock ★★★★

Company Description: Main notes are: Orris, lemon verbena, geranium, musk, white tea, and woods.
In the Bottle: mostly soap, with mint, and a little floral. I am getting the white tea and a bit of greenness too. Trident did this white tea and mint gum, and it tastes like this smells, but without any of the green or soapy aspects.
On the Skin:  So it smells similar in the bottle to how it does on the skin, but on the skin it started to grow on me. It is very unique and eccentric, but it does give off this vibe of a strong intelligent woman. Honestly though, I think this would smell great on some men and I can see this being a signature scent for some people.
Sillage:   it goes about three feet, if you're having a conversation or sitting next to someone they will probably smell your perfume a little.
Lasting Time: 4 hours

The Woman ★★

Company Description: A feminine and enticing blend of seductive Mallow blossom, jasmine, peony, honeysuckle, and sultry Egyptian musk, blended into a sexy opium accord.
In the Bottle: A very faint baby wipe smell, florals, a bunch of other stuff I have no idea about, but in a really good way? I quite like it.
On the Skin:  Similar to in the bottle.
Sillage: ✧
Lasting Time: 4 hours

Final Thoughts

These are such beautiful, unique, and interesting perfumes. The lasting time is average, not bad, but average. I expect to have to apply perfumes at least twice in one day, but I am super impressed with the sillage, some of these even surpass my mainstream perfume roller balls.

Now, for me personally I won't wear a lot of these scents but this was such a wonderful foray into a world of perfumes I would never have picked out for myself. I will most definitely be ordering more from her in the future.

I learned several very valuable lessons: I hate tobacco/smoke scented anything, I'm not into woods scented things, jar grips will never be useless, and I am allergic to grass even in perfume form.

Also, while a lot of these perfumes got two star overall ratings, they probably deserve three stars. I rate them based on my personal preferences and, while I do take into account practical aspects like sillage and lasting time, ultimately at least one star comes purely from how much I enjoyed the scent.

Firebird Bath and Body

Firebird Bath & Body is an Etsy based perfume and bath company. I decided to order from them because I had heard a few good reviews, but they still seemed like a lesser known brand, at least in my circles.

Also, I got a friend of mine to do these reviews with me. We have fairly similar senses of smell, but different skin chemistry. She was privy to the name of the perfume, but not to the notes of the perfume like I am.

Shipping and Packaging

Another etsy order that came in a bubble mailer,
but the samples were still wrapped beyond that and everything arrived safely. Inside the tissue paper the samples were held inside of a black envelope and then they had all been bound together in plastic.

I like how simple, practical, and professional this packaging is. While it looks homemade, it doesn't look unprofessional.

Price

A full size rollerball perfume is 10$ (.3oz or 9mL). Samples cost two dollars a piece and come in packs of three, which is fine for me because I love to try and review multiple scents, but if you don't want samples in multiples of three I can see how this may be inconvenient.

 Scent Reviews

Peach Tea ★★

Company Description: Not a sugary, cloying peach nectar- this fragrance is more reminiscent of the subtle sweet perfume emanating from the fuzzy skin of a just-picked peach on the verge of being perfectly ripe. With a slightly bitter wisp of chilled black tea in the background, and the soft redolence of nearby honeysuckle blooms. Very feminine and summery.
In the Bottle: I'm getting the peach, some apricot but mostly peach, and then tea as the back note, but I can't really discern what type of tea.
On the Skin:  This smells a lot more like apricot black tea to me personally, but still good
Sillage:
Lasting Time:  4-5 hours

Susannah:
(In Bottle) "Definitely getting the tea, a little peachiness, but not overly frilly"
(On Skin) "There is a lot more peach on the skin, I get more apricot. The tea is still there, but faintly"

Almond Milk ★★

Company Description: Soft, sensual, intoxicating: almond, vanilla, musk, a wisp of white chocolate.
In the Bottle: Very similar to how it smells on the skin, but with no cream smell.
On the Skin:  It is a very full but sickly sweet fragrance. On the skin the vanilla and white chocolate do smell like a very sweet cream, I'm getting another note of what I think is supposed to be the almond, but which doesn't smell like almonds at all. Once it starts to mellow out, the vanilla gets stronger, but it is still a little too sweet for me personally.
Sillage: ✧
Lasting Time:  4-5 hours

Susannah:
(In Bottle) "Its almond and vanilla-y but not very strong"
(On Skin) "Putting it on my skin ruined it- it smells like vanilla aerosol on me"

Black Cocoa ★★★

Company Description: A dark and mysterious blend of rich chocolate, golden amber, cedar, sandalwood, and a wisp of black coffee
In the Bottle: It smells a lot more like incense in the bottle, I'm guessing that is the cedar and sandalwood. There are little whiffs of the chocolate and the coffee once you move away from that.
On the Skin: On the skin it is just this very elegant chocolate scent, I can't truly recognize the other notes but they are there. I wish this perfume had better sillage.
Sillage: ✧
Lasting Time:  4 hours

Susannah:
(In Bottle) "Definitely getting the chocolate, but also getting a blackness, whatever that is."
(On Skin) "On the skin its just another chocolate perfume."

Gingerale ★★★

Company Description: This fresh and citrusy perfume smells just like a glass of gingerale- you can even smell the bubbles!
In the Bottle: It smells somewhat like gingerale in the bottle, but on the skin it really brings out the scent.
On the Skin: morphs into magical gingerale-from-the-can scent, carbonation and all. Like I just opened up some Canada Dry, bubbles included.
Sillage: ✧ this one stays close to the body, but I think that is for the best. It would be odd to smell gingerale from six feet away.
Lasting Time: 5 hours, it is still there, but wearing down.

Susannah:
(In Bottle) "This is gingerale, ginger but with a sparkly lightness. It smells carbonated."

(On Skin) "It smells similar in the bottle but it intensifies on the skin in a good way."

Grapefruit Ginger ★★

Company Description: Tart and fresh and full of bright citrusy sparkle and zing, this scent combines juicy grapefruit and zesty lime with the spicy kick of ginger.
In the Bottle: I smell more of the lime than the grapefruit, but the citrus mixes nicely with the ginger.
On the Skin: If the scent that was in the bottle was what came out on the skin, I would be golden. On my skin is morphs into the deep floral with the vaguest hint of grapefruit.
Sillage: ✧
Lasting Time: 4 hours

Susannah:
(In Bottle) "Oh! That's nice, first I get the grapefruit and then the ginger"

(On Skin) "There is a lot more grapefruit, it loses the ginger almost entirely. Later it morphed into a floral and grapefruit scent."

Sugar ★★★

Company Description: Orange blossom, vanilla, berries, a hint of anise- but "Sugar" really describes it best
In the Bottle: Very fruity, with a clean tinge to it. Not like detergent to me, but as Susannah enjoys cleaning I can see how she would get there
On the Skin: On my skin it sweetens up a bit but still very much has that clean smell, it isn't that different from the bottle. I much preferred how it smelled on Susannah.
Sillage: ✧  1-1.5ft from the skin, my preferred sillage.
Lasting Time: 4 hours

Susannah:
(In Bottle) "Not sugar at all, almost citrusy. Like citrus laundry detergent."

(On Skin) "There it is! It's a very light fruitier sugar. If you don't want to smell like a prostitute, but still want to smell like sugar this is the perfume for you."

Final Thoughts

Quality perfumes at reasonable prices, they all wear pretty close to the skin but not so close its pointless. I am incredibly impressed with this brand and I will be ordering from them again. They have less than a page of scents in their shop, but from the samples I got I feel they put a lot of hard work into making good blends while still having a decent selection.
